Chance arises to make amends

Fiji Times - Friday, April 04, 2008 8:02 AM

Fiji 7s coach Josateki Savou is confident his charges will rise to the occasion in Adelaide this weekend to shut the critics after their embarrassment in Hong Kong last weekend.

Savou has opted not to throw the towel in regardless of Fiji's 34-0 trouncing at the hands of New Zealand.

And despite the mounting pressure calling for Savou's removal the prison warden was steadfast when questioned about his future as national coach.

Savou said only the Fiji Rugby Union board could determine his future on the job. He said the critics could say all they want but he was there to see the team did well.

"I know that we are under pressure to perform," Savou said.

"There are many disappointed people after last weekend. We are disappointed. However, we cannot turn back the time. We have to look ahead. I urge the critics to back the team. We need all the prayers to bring back glory to Fiji." The national side held one training session yesterday.

Savou said the run on team for the first match against England would be announced after the captain's run this morning.

At training the focus has been on defence.

"We are in a tough pool," Savou said.

"We will not take any team lightly. The aim is to get off to a good start against England. We have to concentrate for the first seven minutes. Then it is on for 14 minutes."

Savou said he will make a few positional changes to the side.

He said there is a need to revamp the backline.

The team was treated to a barbecue dinner organised by the local Fijian community in Adelaide last night.

The side will join the Fijian community at a church service today.

"We are overwhelmed with the support we have received from the Fijian community here," Savou said last night.
