Don't blame players: Cama

Fiji Times - Friday, April 04, 2008 8:04 AM

FORMER Fiji boxing champion cum strength and conditioning trainer Sunia Cama says players in the national sevens team should not be blamed for the dismal performance in Hong Kong.

Instead, the Fiji Rugby Union board members should come to their senses and recall Waisale Serevi to bring back the confidence in the players.

"Let's not blame the players. It's about time we put our heads together and find solutions," Cama said.

"Everyone was praising the team before they left so we can not point the fingers at the players.

"The FRU should realise we need Serevi because he still has a lot to offer. It was wrong of them (FRU) to send Savou alone."

Cama said instead of blaming Savou, the responsibility to should be shouldered by the FRU for drawing up the selection criteria.

Cama said the FRU should heed the call of the nation to get Serevi back.

"They must remember they are there on behalf of the people of Fiji. They should put any differences aside and recall Serevi.

"Only then will the players receive guidance." They need the right player there."

There has been a public outcry for the FRU to get Serevi back on board to be involved with the national team's preparation.

Most are concerned that without Serevi, Fiji will not win any tournament in the 2007-2008 International Rugby Board Sevens World Series.

So far Fiji has finished runner-up in all of the opening legs of the series in Dubai and George and made early exits in Wellington and San Diego.
