Do you think we will get better in USA?

THE Fiji side is off to San Diego for the next tournament this weekend. Do you think we will be able to improve or does this team just doesn't have the X factor?

It will be a waste of money sending Fiji there if you dont rectify the problem with FRU.You can sent the Fiji Team to USA to do caregiver to the oldies..That will be more productive...Pliz Fiji One..dont waste your time on televising the Fiji seven team game....Give us wrestling...John Cena..Batista..and more.

New comments by coach on kicking duty: So this means Vucago will play full game instead of being replaced?? Hope so, JSavou, it’s not only about the kicker it’s about overall [Coach-it seems you a shifting the buck of loosing to the kicker] - you still need the old kicker but improve on it -what did you see in your first choice kicker that made your selection. Just improve on the tactics and tell them not to rush their kick - concentrate, stance, angle and follow through. Now with Vucago you must ensure the players scoring close to or under upright - Vucago is not a long range drop goal kicker, otherwise you still need your old kicker..?

Now the management/FRU are confident of beating Samoa in LA??? counting chicks?? why dont you follow Serevi's comments "it will be a challenge - no teams are easy, all have improved and always put forward their best against Fiji, but we will give our best" Serevi does not underestimate any team and simple statement.
Now the coach and management are confident of beating Samoa - if not?? does this give us the right to ponder negative comments, I assume yes..

Just give your best shot, plan your strategy well JS [remember all loosing teqams team have made ammendments from last tournment]. Play our open free flowing game pattern - currently we still lack the size to commit and offload - maybe Seta & Naba.

Wish you all well and to all supporters in LA - pse cheer them on...

yeah , they can,,But dont hype too much about it..Pride will only makes humpty dumpty have a great fall..and it hurts ha!..I can do all things through chrsit who strengthens me..even in loosing..gracious in deafeat..the team does it but the media and the fiji public are just bunch of loosers..

Fiji is doing pretty good .... iam just against the hyped up media condescending attitude shown via the media as to what fiji will or can or is going to do.
Niether iam for the whinning and excuses after our butts got kicked and we run backwards with out tail in between our legs.
    Come on die standing.
lick your wounds and get ready to rumble...TAKE NO PRISONER!
lastly at this part of the evolution of sevens if you dont give it the respectful attitude it deserves youll end up on the butt end of the stick.

I fear for da worst.very soon teams like Japan and Tonga will beat us in da pool games..how long does it take to build a team.it took Wayne Pivac much less time then da current coach n yet ha won da world cup.serevi took over n won fiji's 1st ever series win.both were dumped like sacks of rotten potatoes.I feel like giving a kick on fru officials ass..I dont like watching Fiji's games anymore.I watched coz da master was there n da games were intresting..now a local team beats da national team n da coach is still not worried,Y?simply becoz he is getting paid to coach only n not to win but for da master he was paid to win and wen he didnt do it,bang on head...

Any Fiji team with a good coach, manager and captain should win any IRB 7s tournament. For this team, if each of the above official rises up and takes the rightful position and do as expected then this team will retain the cup last years team won.Let us pray for them Fiji. Go Fiji GO !
  7. al ex-marist of VANCOUVER
The ex-Marist boyz have been flying down to LA/San Diego for seveal years now. We feel that the team needs a good visionary and leader, and should be made up of older experienced players(ryder, nebuliwaqa) as well as newer players. The team needs a play, aker and learn to tackle.
Lets do better in San Diego
  8. Northland of Northland
Could Peter Murphy justify his line "rebuilding stage"??? Rebuilding for what? during IRB? or for HK? If it is for HK than tell the nation so we may accept the trial and error - because we are not going for IRB points and overall champion?? [Where is this Puff from...- Kiwi, he is Tienjan eye here - thus the statement from Kiwi coach..]FRU dont be charmed by his sweet talk -did he rebuild the team for World Cup 15???NOOOO

Where did this Marist sevens sprout out from thus forgoing the BP series and be now used for HK selection 'shame on EX Marist @ FRU"- playing money and game politics - now Fiji Bitter is spending less on other clubs because of this Marist club [Joe Rodan Ex connection]. If this is the case, than FRU should give other club organizers the same right." is this club championship or national championship???

    Serevi shared this same sentiment

We need to blend experience and with new [70-80% old and 30-20% new] we are the other way round. Look at NZ, SA, Samoa,etc... Cut the shit Murphy and tell the nations - so we may not expect anything from IRB series - it seems you are telling us this is a selection trial for HK..come HK totally new team??? Speak to the nation FRU...Now he is saying to make comments after US sevens, for what same team if they win?? They have yet to play NZ, Aussie, Tonga to further surface our weakness to their advantage, than FRU back to square one??? New team, coach etc.etc.etc...

We are the breeding ground of sevens stars because of our natural flair and will broduce that "X" factor [natural not that other teams lack. NZ have realised this [NZ coach surfaced this X factor term], now NZ coach has come up with their new find Victor while the natural combination of Raikabula and Cama is further developed - Victor is the missing link - come HK the strategy should gel. Do we have such strategy with Savou or FRU???

Peter Murphy is taking us on a boat ride named "suasua yani suasua mai - "one gear forward and two back"

at least get vubibaka for san diego he carries a hope otherwise cant expect much, perhaps another loss, another disappointmnet

How many chances does the coach need to prove himself. Lets give him the entire season and lets see the end results. Perhaps than the FRU would act. IT will be very late.

We have to get experienced players

I will put my expectation that Fiji will win the BOWL Final and leave it at that.......IT WILL BE A MIRACLE IF FIJI WIN THE CUP FINAL!!!! Let alone win a pool game.
Maybe Ravai(OP) can add some enthusiasm and firepower to the team

Well the only way to find out is to find out. It would be foolish to change the team now before San Diego, let these players have another crack at it and hope they won't make the same mistakes. As for Savou to lay the blame on his players for not following instructions is a real big liu muri on his part. You're suppose to be a team. When one triumphs you all triumph. When one loses you all lose. We know there's a lot of pressure on the boys to perform. A lack of experience isn't their fault.

As for the FRU CEO ratu tim and his comment on Fiji tv news last night that we're still in second place. We admire your optimism but its a very distant 2nd and nobody here in Fiji likes being 2nd to the kiwis in 7s.
Bring in more experienced hands to the team to help mold the younger guys. Open up future selection grounds to more than just one 7s tournament here in Fiji and don't rule out the overseas based players so soon.

i vote for change!!!FRU listen to wisdom from us fans........
  15. Kai Loma of Suva
The players are good enough, but need good leaders on the field. Otherwise it all falls apart. Naba just does not have the leadership skills required and this showed with his yellow card. Also can someone please teach our players how to tackle. The commentators said it best when he said "Fiji players don't like to tackle, they just like to scrag the players jersey."

This is evidant right down to the grassroots competitions. Look at the photos in the papers about the Kadavu Sevens, same thing, jersey pulling instead of tackling. All the other teams (even Samoa and Tonga) tackle around the stomach and legs. Maybe Ili Tabua and Peter Murphy can do something about this problem.
  16. cho! of suva
Oh boy! this team of young men has a great potential. You just need a good and complete coach like Wai, 2 or 3 new experiemced players, put players in their own natural positions, remove players who are liability in the team i.e who comitted the same mistake over and over again and not change, Fiji will do well.

FOR THE PLAYERS DO NOT TAKE THE CRITICISIM WRONGLY, TAKE IT POSITIVELY. IF YOU CAN LEARN FROM YOUR PAST MISTAKES, NEVER EVER COMMIT THE SAME MISTAKE AGAIN LIKE NEUMI USUALLY DID, IMPROVE YOUR GENERAL PLAY TO 2OO%, PLAY AS A TEAM NOT AS INDIVIDUAL AND TRUST THE GOOD LORD TO DO HIS PART, YOU CAN EXPECT A GOOD WEEKEND. ITS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD YET. BE POSITIVE AND TELL YOURSELVE YOU CAN DO BETTER.

FRU I BELIEVE ARE NOW EATING THEIR OWN WORDS. THE FIJIANS ESPECIALLY THE LEADERS WHO THINK THEY ARE GOD MUST LEARN TO SWALLOW THEIR PRIDE, BE HUMBLE AND RECOGNISE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE PROVEN THEMSELVES. FIJIANS LEADERS MUST LEARN TO LEAVE THEIR PERSONAL DIFFERENCES ASIDE AND BE PROFEESIONAL. DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL NOT YOUR EGO.

TO ALL COACHES YOU MUST ALWAYS LEARN TO GIVE CREDIT TO WHERE IT IS DUE. FOR EXAPLE, SAVOU INSTEAD OF SAYING SORRY TO THE FIJIAN PUBLIC MUST AT LEAST PRAISE THE SAMOANS AND ADMIT THEY ARE A GOOD TEAM THAT DAY. FIJIAN HAVE ALOT TO LEARN IN THEIR PERSONAL VALUES AND INTERGRITY. IF NOT YOU'RE CONTINUE TO FOOL YOURSELVES. IF YOU CAN'T DO IT ALONE PLEASE ADMIT IT AND SEEK HELP.

THE DOWNFALL OF THE TEAM IS NOT BECAUSE OF THE PLAYERS IT IS BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE AT THE TOP OF FRU THINKS THEY ARE SMART.

3 tournaments have gone and NZ is triple winners. Yet all Savou and the FRU can do is spread verbal diorrehea about what went wrong and come up with the same excuses : defence, inexperience, wrong options,re-start retention and conversions.
ITS SIMPLE. YOU DONT HAVE TO BE ROCKET SCIENTIST TO FIGURE IT OUT. You have Vunibaka,Serevi& Lepani Nabuliwaqa at your disposal to give our team a balance BUT you insist on using others. By the end of this weekend, you'll be crying the same old story of the one that got away and N.Z will be 4 up. SAVOU CHANGE YOUR TEAM BEFORE PUBLIC PRESSURE CHANGES THE COACH.
  18. Joe of Suva
Change the coach and the selectors and FRU especially the coach. He doesn't even know how to coach for them to win thier own lineout and thier own kick off and scrum - these things are coached and practiced.Anyways...

The whole rugby world is wondering why the most celebrated player on earth in the code was never involved in the team for the IRB series for Fiji.
Even the rugby 15's world champs wants to hire Serevi for a sevens academy and name it after him.
In Fiji we have people who go against him from within the FRU itself. No wonder we have disppointment all the time.

They are nothing to Fiji Rugby compared to Serevi and this include the whole FRU management including Peter Murphy. They Didnot cut a good deal with him at the end of the Series last year so Serevi resigns and so does the rest of his boyz.
FRU think they know better picked a school boys team with the three old but still green players with the aging Nanuku. Nanuku is too old to play again for Fiji since he cannot convert a very simple conversion - so much for die for my country. Ke sega ga e nakita no ulu pori.Sa yadra!

If FRU does not make any effort to make ammends with Serevi than this kind of wrong choice will always come up since our best players will never want to play.

Tu Jim,if money is the problem, Don't forget the Fiji rugby public can give donations if you ask for it. It had been done in the past and it can be done again now and in the future.Probably better ask in advance and have a target.

Oh well. felt so much better now I've said my bit and sorry for any inconvinience.
    Bula!!

Well, lets support this team to the US 7'S ok,and will judge them after the tournament, pick the best from there and include all the star players from 2007(Leps,Naevo,Ryder and others....),and for sure Na Momo Serevi should take over the coaching again...

    To the FRU,

Whatever it takes to keep the Legend,Star, the One and Only Serevi. He sacrifise a lot for his country...God knows and thats why he is so Blessed,He loves His country so dearly,He is the TRUE WARRIOR who will never ever stop FIGHTING for his beloved FIJI....NA MOMO,YOU ARE THE TRUE LEGEND

The Top Brass at FRU building are saying that this is a build up to the next world cup. Its rubbish, this tournament has been played from 1999 and we only won once. Why waste money, keep the players and train them at home for 4 years. The fastest player in Fiji was running as fast as the slowest player in the opponents team.
They will lose no chance. Very soon we will loose bowl semi final.

Give the boys a chance. There were some questionable decisions by the ref and touch judges. If these boys get enough exposer and experience, they should improve. Bind mai ragone, let's support Fiji!

Fiji will always the best team in the whole universe, and all other team will always saw the Fiji team in a very different standard, but my advise to the boys individually, I'am figting (boxing)
here in USA,when ever you play with any team, you must trust yourself, have the gut's,confident that you can tackle your opponent no matter how tough or strong they are? always be stable and use your counter attack very well at all times. all the best boys and God Bless.

Fijians are known for their flair. It wasn't the case in wellington. No stragegy, no structure, no specialist playmaker or speedsters. Seems we had 7 forwards, who were playing 15s style rugby in a 7s game...more interested in bulldozing their way rather than creating gaps.

Myfrens and I wacthed the game on Saturday when Fiji went down to Samoa. I didn;t have my dinner that nite, I was really in tears and my heart was very sad. This continue after the comments from the FRU CEO that nothing could be done to change the teams to San Diego. Can he step aside and let me in cause I think I am more qualified than him. If he cannot make decision, please vacate the office..do not blame the players blame FRU...
  44. Elgorah of Nakasi
Where is the transparency? The nation of Fiji is really HURT. Don't blaim the players I guess the FRU and Management should be blaim for their WRONG DECISION MAKING. FRU appoint the selectors to select the FINAL TEAM for the 2 tournaments (Wellington & San Diego)BUT quick decision was made after the selection....yes, no one question them...why? Corruption!! Please OPEN YOUR EYES and OPEN THE DOOR TO OUR BELOVED SNAEVO, WRYDER, LEPS, IBOBO AND OUR MASTER MIND 7s COACH SIR-REVI. Please FRU have a heart for our most outstanding experience 7s player mention above. DO NOT MAKE LADY FIJI CRY AGAIN!!!

My addition of comments under the guise of constructive constructive.

Bascially, the selection criteria is flawed.

No hint of real speed was evident in the players who were recruited for that purpose. The drop kick restarts were miserable not forgetting the attempts at goal. For e.g the 10 meter attempt which would have seen Fiji level the scores with Samoa. There was a big hype about Fiji acquiring the player[s] to fulfill the kicking duties but sadly the tournament proved otherwise.

In addition, the "kick offs" which the adolescent would even understand as a very imporatant part of the game was hardly contested. The ruck situations were not solidified.

Forward passes was an eyesore. One of the most basic basic skills that a rugby player must have.

And most importantly the defence. With Fiji against Samoa in the cup quarters and with South Africa in the plate semis, "one on one tackles" was lacking. Which led to the over-committment of players in the ruck situation.

1 or 2 local tournaments played before selecting the players is insufficient. And playing well against the Fiji bati sevens team does not necessarily mean that they will do well on the international arena.

The players off course played their best but it's the management and the coaches job to put the best team out there.

Admirably the stand up players for Fiji are Cakau and Vucago. Consistent as ever.

At the end of the day, the best team won. Congrats to Samoa for beating Fiji. And to NZ and Samoa for a pulsating 2008 Wellington finals. It's games like that, that makes Sevens rugby addictive.

I congratulate the guys for their gallant effort, what can we say there will always be a losing team and a winning team, we just have to accept the result as it is and look forward to the next game.

Even with Serevi as coach/player and William Ryder in the team last year, Fiji still lost the tournament maybe there are other teams out there who played much better than Fiji. The team just need to concentrate on improving their weaknesses and play with much more confidence. I reckon the young players did really well with few more exposures and game they will certainly make a big impact to Fiji rugby 7s

All the best boys in San Diego!!!!
  49. Amitabh's Shades of On my way home to Bollywood
Lets put our faith in the coach, the x factor? Rawaqa, Mawi? potential i would say. Why do'nt we give these boys more game time and high pressure play till the end of the series. We are the world champions for goodness sake, i think we should be rebuilding toward the next world cup. I prefer the tag Fiji Sevens World Champs then World Series Champs. We should start exposing as much talent as we can now and start building toward that. Tietjens has done this many times over, i am sure we can too!
The KIWIS with all their might and money are neither 15's nor 7's World Champs, that a thought is'nt it?

It was sad that Neumi did not perform to the standard. I recalled the statement he made on the fiji times sports news that "they will prove wrong all the statements made about the team".

After watching all the games at wellington sevens, I proved that they need Serevi, Naevo, william ryder, Lepani, Bobo and Caucau. These men makes huge different and with different styles of skills which news players need to learn and create.

Shame to the FRU. Serevi is the best man for Fiji as player/coach. Savou should go back to Naboro as he is no match for Serevi.
  59. shakeel of NZ
i am a die hard fan of fiji and they are in my hearts but it is sad to see that the team now is not able to make the semis. what FRU did with Serevi is what they are paying for now. Serevi saved the nation when we needed him by winning the IRB but then they turned back on him and made Joe the coach who was just learning from Serevi. there is still time left. Cumon FRU apologise to Serevi and bring him back as is and will be the number 1 in this code
  60. margie of Suva
They should try n have enough guts ..The coach is not playing it's the players whoe are playing n they should be blamed for their weaknesses n try to always have positive aim b4 the game....
  61. Jay of Raiwaqa
We all know the problem that our team is facing. The problems are the FRU, selectors and the Coach. They thought that by putting Serevi away will not be a problem to the team. Serevi is not chosen because of his name, he also went through fitness test like the others. They now realize their problems and we all hope they do the right thing this time.
  62. john of suva
The captain should review what he did to the samoan player that got him a yellow card. Samoa got 2 tries by then.He should now think about his unhidden fouls the next time he plays..

i guess Mala might have realised what experience means after failing the final pass to Nanuku for a Fiji try against Samoa. cum on Tau, do not worry in US u can do much better. but keep Fiji at heart and treat to tournament just like a Farebrother game in Rt Cakobau Park, where u always dazzle with your pace...what u did reminds me of Penisoni Wakis baptism in HK.
  65. Vusheka
Can't really put all the blame on the current team. They basically lack experience as compared to NZ, Samoa, SA. Let's hope they do well in San Diego. One thing is for certain, changes are definitely needed b4 Hong Kong.

FIJI CAN STLL DO WELL IF NEUMI IS GIVEN SEMI RETIREMENT,MARIKA VUNIBAKA TO REPLACE ETONIA AND BAKANICEVA TO REPLACE NEUMI. THE REST REMAIN.

I SAID ALREADY. NEUMI IS GOOD ONLY AS AN IMPACT PLAYER. HE COSTED FIJI'S CHANCES TO THE FINAL. 3 MISTAKES ONE AFTER ANOTHER BEFORE THE FINAL WISTLE WERE TOO COSTLY FOR THE TEAM.

HOWEVER I ADMIRE THE YOUNG GUYS IN THE TEAM. WELL DONE YOUNG GUYS.

  69. Wise of USA
