Fiji wins opener

FIJI kick started its defence of the San Diego 7s with a 26-7 win over Australia this morning.
Despite the score line there were areas in Fiji’s play which showed the side will have to work hard if it is to top the pool this afternoon.
A brace of tries to veteran Setafano Cakau and one each to Emosi Vucago, Neumi Nanuku and Akuila Nacolaiviu was enough for the victory.
Rob Horne got the try for Australia.
Fiji despite having scored 19 unanswered points in the first half, failed to show support play and there was a lot of individual play.
This was evident as the side conceded sevens penalties in the match.
There were also times when players looked as if they didn’t know what option to take and passed the ball anyhow.
This was a far cry fro yesteryears when the Fijians used to keep the ball in hand and if they passed it, it was exactly where they wanted it to go.
The ever green Cakau was in fine form again as he showed great power and vision and apart from getting two tries set up one for Nacolaiviu.
He managed to break tackles and beat defenders and will play a key role in the tournament.
