FRU to review selection process
Fiji Times - Tuesday, February 12, 2008 9:04 AM
THE Fiji Rugby Union yesterday admitted it needed to review the selection process and that Josateki Savou's team was not made up of the best players in the code.
This came after Fiji only managed to win the plate title at San Diego where it beat Argentina 26-21 in extra time.
"If you look at the composition of the team, most of them are not seasoned sevens players," said FRU chief executive Ratu Timoci Tavanavanua.
"We will definitely look at the selection process as we need to have sevens specialists in the team.
"While none of the senior players were available for these tournaments, we will have to bring some players who are seasoned sevens players.
"There is a need to get in players who are naturals in the code and not expect players to make a transition from fifteens to sevens."
Players were selected from a 15-member training squad named after a series of camps last year.
FRU High Performance Unit manager Peter Murphy said while they were happy with the selection criteria, the process was an important aspect which they needed to look at.
Sevens is now part of HPU and Murphy and his brigade want to provide the best for the side for Hong Kong.
"Are we concerned? Yes we are. We will have a full review after the team returns home," he said.
