NZ-South Africa final

IRB - Monday, February 11, 2008 11:37 AM

Reigning IRB Sevens Series champions New Zealand will face South Africa in the final of the cup in San Diego.

The Kiwis stormed past Kenya 50-10 in the semi-final.
South Africa beat Samoa 22-12.

In doing so NZ has broken a six year old record of 34 successive match victories and closed in on a sixth Cup title in a row, a fourth this season.

Fiji face Pumas in Plate final

Fiji edged England in the first plate semi to keep alive their hopes of scoring eight points for the season in their pursuit of runaway leaders New Zealand.

England clearly missed the inspirational presence of injured forward Isoa Damudamu but led either side of the break through powerful wing Uche Oduoza and then Dominic Shabbo. Fiji, though, struck late in the game through Viliame Maya and Malakai Bakaniceva to take the high quality match 21-14.

The other semi final was equally tight and, with the Pumas leading 19-14 late in the game, Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino kicked a rare penalty to put the match beyond the Scots, 22-14.

USA through to Bowl Final

Home favourites the USA Eagles delighted the 20,000 strong PETCO Park crown by beating Series veterans France 12-10 to win through to a Bowl final against Wales.

Two tries by outstanding 15-a-side international Chris Wyles were enough to edge home the Eagles, the second coming at the death and bringing his personal tally for the tournament to eight.

Wales' victory over Canada was secure midway through the second half. Captain Jonathan Edwards scored early to set them on their way and Gareth Baber's side pulled away with three further scores before Canada crossed for a late consolation.

Aussies favourites for Shield

The Wallaby Sevens won through to the final of the Shield with a heavy 63-0 over Mexico. Tim Wright scored three tries en route to the simple victory and Bill Millard's side will face Chile after the South Americans scored late to pip the West Indies 19-17 in the other semi final.
