Fiji beaten, Tonga stuns South Africa
The Fiji Times - Saturday, February 02, 2008 3:11 PM
A SECOND half fightback wasn't enough as Fiji bowed out of the cup quarter-final of the Wellington Sevens this afternoon. Fiji had skipper Etonia Naba sin-binned early in the match for a foul deserving of a yellow card as Samoa scored three tries and Samoa led 19-0 at half-time. Samoa had Lolo Lui sin-binned after the break and Fiji grabbed the opportunity to score three tries through Setefano Cakau (2) and Tomasi Mawi. An easy missed conversion by Neumi Nanuku proved costly as Samoa won 19-17. Fiji will now play South Africa in the plate semi-final at 5pm (Fiji time). Tonga upset South Africa 14-10 in the cup quarter-final and will play Samoa in the second cup semi-final at 6pm (Fiji time). The first cup quarter-final at 5.35pm (FT) will be between New Zealand, 40-5 winners over Wales, and Australia. The Aussies beat Scotland 31-7. ends
