Fiji bombed out of the cup competition against Samoa in Wellington this afternoon. What do you think went wrong?

From the beginning of 7s competition, Samoan teams were always the looser and they know that. From last year at the Westpac Stadium they were surprised to be scoring against Fiji on the early minutes of the game. If there were some game analysts and strategists on the Fiji team, this area has to be seriosly thought of and strategies put in place with the team.In Wellington this year, unfortunately I saw nothing.. no structure,no strategy. Samoa scored early and boosted their morale and then they started to slow and kill the game. Thats their strategy, so they won at a marginal difference. BUT WON and eliminated our BEST Fiji team . Also the Samoa players were doing their warm up 20 minutes ahead of Fiji team. Why were they so late ? To warm up well before the first game of the day was very important, and we know that well. Doesnt this reflect the poor leadership and management ? The players had to dance to the music of the Team management. So let us not only put the blame on our inexperienced players because they take command from the team leaders. Maybe we also have inexperienced leaders, whom the FRU House have to relook at it as well. Some say "no one is a bad soldier but we may have poor commanders", when we have bad situation as such.FRU House has to seriously relook at these if Fiji team needs to win this years competitions.

Could Peter Murphy justify his line "rebuilding stage"??? Rebuilding for what? during IRB? or for HK? If it is for HK than tell the nation so we may accept the trial and error - because we are not going for IRB points and overall champion?? [Where is this Puff from...- Kiwi, he is Tienjan eye here - thus the statement from Kiwi coach..]FRU dont be charmed by his sweet talk -did he rebuild the team for World Cup 15???NOOOO

Where did this Marist sevens sprout out from thus forgoing the BP series and be now used for HK selection 'shame on EX Marist @ FRU"- playing money and game politics - now Fiji Bitter is spending less on other clubs because of this Marist club [Joe Rodan Ex connection]. If this is the case, than FRU should give other club organizers the same right." is this club championship or national championship???

    Serevi shared this same sentiment

We need to blend experience and with new [70-80% old and 30-20% new] we are the other way round. Look at NZ, SA, Samoa,etc... Cut the shit Murphy and tell the nations - so we may not expect anything from IRB series - it seems you are telling us this is a selection trial for HK..come HK totally new team??? Speak to the nation FRU...Now he is saying to make comments after US sevens, for what same team if they win?? They have yet to play NZ, Aussie, Tonga to further surface our weakness to their advantage, than FRU back to square one??? New team, coach etc.etc.etc...

NZ has now found their missing link come HK in the form of Victor while the natural flair of Cama Jnr and Raikabula is further nutured. Come HK Cama Jnr and Victor would gel in well in Raikabulaln. Tietjen is mouldnig his his "X" factor - he surface this term with Rider. He does not have the luxury of having natural flair but he build on one once he finds the player. Cama Jnr is now a forerunner while Victor is the new kid on the block. Come HK, they will form a formidable backline - a challenge to ours. We have all what NZ, SA, England etc coaches are looking for but rather shortsighted to say the least

Peter Murphy is taking us on a boat ride named "suasua yani suasua mai - "one gear forward and two back"

NZ and Fiji arent the only teams at the wellington 7's - when fiji begin to realise that and focus on each game at a time then maybe they wont go into tournaments thinking only of beating NZ and forgeting that they also have to beat teams like Samoa - which in this case they DIDNT!!!

Most of us are blaming NABA for that loss to Samoa...I'm on Naba's side and I thank him for what he did to the Samoan player but unfortunately the reply missed the target. It was the Samoan player who at first deliberately tried to hit Naba's face with his elbow and the referee did not even see it.How come??

All the best in Santiago Boys I know you can do it this time.

"Sa koya tiko qori Naita "if they can give it and they should be ready to have a taste of their own medicine .

Sivi na veikau da qai kalu - sa rui levu na vosa, lailai na cakacaka - too much talk, no work on the field!!!

Indiscipline, missed tackles, missed conversions, individualism, they were rucked out!!! A Captain being sinbinned one minute into the game is badddddd!!!!

So much hype about Lewaqai - he did not perform after his big words -I will do all that Naevo was doing on the field - we did not win any starting kick offs which is important in the game of 7s- what was he there for in the first place????

FRU should stop all this political bull-shyte they are embroilled in and bring in people who can do the job and bring glory in the abbreviated code!! We have a world cup to defend in 2009 - what strategy has FRU set up for the successful defense of this cup?? Are we going to change coaches yet again??? We have gone through 8 changes of coaches in how many years and Gordon Tiejens is still there for the All Blacks - Win or lose the NZRU have put their support behind this one man - why couldn't FRU do the same??? Bring back Serevi into the Coaching panel and put Savou back into being his assistant!! 3 IRB games and from 2 finals we are down to being bombed out big time in the quarters and then losing out again in the plates!!!

    Va cava tiko???

Nothing went wrong, all was expected. There was to much expectations from the people of Fiji. This is a good example of 15s rugby in the 90s. We know the problems we know solutions and yet there are no actions. Rugby management in Fiji should be more micro because we should not follow text book style management has this is the Fiji Islands and we should do it our way. The only way....have a blessed week

Please let the coach explain, are they after the men or the ball. It seems they are more interested in man-hunting than ball-hunting. Savou please change your style or resign. It seems you are not reading the game.

savou thinks that the new players have got expperience like william ryder. well they dont. nobody can be like william ryder. remember last year, with ryders play fiji won 31-0 to nz. well that just shows that new players have to wait. let old players hangle tha game. and if they want to bring in new players i think 1 player per tournament.
and please give a last chance to serevi. he has a lot of expences but he got wat it needs to take fiji to victory. REMEMBER MELROSE CUP. FIJIS LAST TRY.

NOW COME ON.. WITH RYDER MORE WORKED OUT AND HEALTHY AND SEREVI'S LAST CHANCE. THEY WOULD GIVE THEIR BEST. AND MAYBE WE CAN GET TO SEE RYDERS FIRST TOUCH OF THE BALL TRY AGAIN AND MAYBE SEREVIS GOOSESTEPPING BECOME A COMBINATION AND WIN US THIS SERIES.

    God Bless Fiji..
and ryder we waiting 4 u..

Guys, give it up. Based on the team's performance in Wellington alone, San Diego could also result in a quarter final departure.

Pool A is NZ, Scotland, Wales and France; Pool B is Fiji Samoa, Australia and West Indies.

So if Samoa beats us again in pool play, as runners up in Pool B we play the winners of Pool A, which should be NZ and then its another isa rikhi maseki sa la! Shoot me now!

My advice is that you do not work on your speed by training at sand dunes. You need to run down hill fools. There is no structure in the team, no good leader, no good runner, no kicker. What expertise does Jo savou have? Fiji Times Editorial (2/2/08) request us to have patience, remember this is not the training ground, it is a tournament. The result goes in the record books. We can never match NZ record of winning tournaments afetr tournaments and series after series. GOD bless Fiji Team ( Running like Tortoise).

You asking what went wrong? Can`t you seefor yourself what went wrong? Totally everything and everybody went wrong, that is what went wrong.
Sack all of them! We have the materials to prove that and yet we are keeping them for what?
A few things I can discern here with the FRU, either the old ones knows too much or hiding too many!
    SACK THEMMMMMMMM ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!

Well, the Wellington Sevens now finished and our mission was not accomplished as the Samoans beat us fairly, and I want to thank our Fiji Team for those hard games that they played.Every team that took part in every tournaments comes in with one mission, and that is to play and win.Unfortunately for the Fiji Team in Wellington last week,it!s not their day. They lost to a team which is little better than them in whatever ways you and me thinks:fitness, game plan, combinations that worked out, speed, etc.Ok, let!s take Wellington Sevens results as our guideline to our next tournament in San Diego and to those upcoming ones in Hong Kong and the rest so that it can brings positive results to us all.Let!s thank them and keep praying for them. For the Fiji Sevens Team, may our LORD GOD guide you, protect you and provide for you in the days are ahead of you.Train hard, play hard with all in your heart and thank HIM for the results.GOD BLESS!

    ….Your criteria needs Reviewing……

    We need those exeptional players.

New Zealand is one good example.
They lost many games against Fiji, against England, but the NZ rugby Union still keep Gordon Tijgen….why do they do away with Serevi for only one game last year when he was getting good record??

Wish to thank the coach and the players for the recent achievements.
Don’t forget that we are still “The world Sevens champions! Serevi,Ryder,Nabuliwaqa,Delasau, Caucau, Vunibaka, Naevo, Apoplosi and Daunivucu should come in. Afew of them in the team will do.

Wayne Pivac brought overseas players and won the last WC.
We are still the World Sevens Champion…Don’t forget that.
    Go Fiji Go.
    Good Luck Boys.

Wish the Fiji Team Good Luck in the next leg.

wot were their thinking running at the Samoan straight...thats not our style of playing...n wot was Naba doin as the captain..not talking to his players..thats shows inexperience in his part i think setafano cakau should be captain..why was vucago been sub?? i think we should bring Serevi back n Nabuliwaqa or Ryder as playmaker..thats the missin link to this side..their just need more game time 2gether..i think we should replace Naba too much miss tackle n silly tackle for that yellow card against Samoa...well i do hope their improve on their game before the USA 7's and pliz coach wot was the game plan....tackle hard one on one n pliz avoid contact and throw the ball around fijian style we are known for...well USA 7's next week and pliz bring back the glory to Fiji..GUD LUCK BOYZ!!

hello...w!!!! what went wr...ong?????? is this a sarcastic question? fru, coach and every individuals knew that our national team was not up to par, period, should have not asked such question because we should expect that. A lot of changes should have taken place before going to Wellington, yet was ignored. Now its time, not too late, changed the coach and include serevi, ryder and marika if we want to enjoy the sevens again like we used to. We all love our country and we need victory in HK 7's
  33. sega tale ni qai laubo of Lautoka
As we speak, Fiji should now forget that 7's rugby is our speciallity anymore.
This is the problem on hand that we have to consider and understand , we think that we are above all and unbeatable in sevens when we are no longer.

I believe that some upcoming players need playtime to mature before they can be released for big games, local tournament are different ,they are unstoppable under our own crowd but in big tournament they they are lost.

I am just wondering if is it neccesary to make changes when the game is tough and players are still performing ???

Coach, Pls its not an IRB Rule to change players at half time especially when some players has still got full tank and still performingand the game is a must win.

Pls include Lepani for the next leg in Santiago and drop Bakaniceva immediately, hes too holy to play rugby.

    LASTLY..........

As stated elsewhere on FT Forums, there are no bad soldiers, only bad generals. The Wellington squad man for man has more raw talent and flair as well as match fitness as any other team.

Savou and Ravai just do not have the ability to motivate and come up with strategies. Since returning from UK, last series the team veterans had losr faith in Savou, after Nabuliwaqa was unfairly penalised.

But the high and mighty at FRU are incapable of self-criticism, hard decisions and are just plain incapable.

When this squad when down to a makeshift army side three times before they left for Wellington, the alarm bells were disconnected and the Coach brushed it aside.

The sad thing about all this is that even now, the FRU brains trust still think everything is A-OK. Just look at the media photo of Murphy hugging the CEO with Tabua grinning ear to ear.

Who wants to bet the three of them think they were solely responsible for the RWC teams performance?
  35. Duavata of NZ
That was a drastic measure that the FRU took by relieving Serevi of his post as a coach, especially with someone of his caliber who is well versed with the abbreviated code of rugby which Fiji is reknown for its flambouyant and entertaining style of play.Common FRU wake up cut the arrogance. We have seen in the last 2 series including the wellington 7's how Fiji has crumbled, some point in life mistakes do happen but that doesnt mean drastic measures have to be taken.Bring back Serevi and inject some of the big names into the team for Hong Kong that's the only way Fiji can get back on top or else see ya later!!!

Thank you coach, officials and above all the players for the recent achievements.
You are still world champions! But if you play like this till the next WC... then probably you need those exeptional players. Exceptional coz you cannot find another: Serevi,Ryder,Nabuliwaqa,Delasau, Caucau, Vunibaka, Naevo.... anywhere but Fiji! We believe Wayne Pivac brought overseas players and won the last WC. Brazil also used Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivelino (overseas based) and also won the WC soccer....so probably your criteria needs reviewing. You must accept that technology has made todays world unfairly competitive for 3rd world countries. To survive in your game you must 'sell the best' while developing better products.
(Unless you are just using the IRB in preparation for the next WC then thats another story). Fiji has all the best 7s exponents scattered around the world. Its a matter of getting them together with realistic rules based on an overseas/local ratio formula. Local players can never really match overseas-based players in terms of training, financial benefits and experience. So why leave out MOST of the cream? Having said that we salute those brave enough to wear the black and white jersy with pride. Good Luck next time round.
  38. Navua of UK
Yeah FIJI lost to SAMOA and i think the best team win.We didnt watch the NZ 7s but we watch Dubai and George 7s.The SAMOANS were so unfit and lack of everything to win that tournament. They went back home done there homework and now they deserve it.Dont forget folks, they went to one Argentina 7s tourney and they won it.I think Serevis Drifters went as well.
FIJIIII!!!I dont know...I dont know who to blame. Can someone tell me on why we drop Serevi as a COACH.He has talk the talk and walk the walk.PLEASE FRU give Serevi the task to COACH the team FOREVER and EVER.

we need a playmaker to ease the presure from Vucago,Leps would be the best around.Naba lost himself and discipline was expensive.our wingers should execute chip kicks on the run not from a standing position.variations at line out and let the 1/2 do the calls, this is the best option,it allows the hooker and the locks to just listen and execute the calls made and also the 1/2 is the only person who knows the best calls to make because he is right there watching the mistakes etc.quit pulling jerseys from the rear and do the normal tackle boys, around the legs(knees i.e).who is teaching our boys how to tackle,I can help, free of charge but that is another story.

  44. sudhaiya na vasu of Suva Fiji
Yes we saw it all, no excuse and a shame to try to hide or take it lightly. As I have said in this forum before the team leaves for NZ is to sack Naba and if only Savou could listen to some comments it will help him learn from his mistakes if it is trully right that we learn from our mistakes.
The truth always hurt but it always points to the wrongs where our learning based from.
Well I have no further comments but only to admit that Savou should do the only respective thing and that is to step down while we still can have a chance to turn things around. Change the whole team, Vucago is good in possesion but is out of position always in defence.
If not then sack them all!

For the players and the officials, it's time to go back to the drawing board. Our young boys needs experience. Me sa kuwa na cudru kei na vosa vaka veitalia!

discipline let them down again. no need for Naba to use his other hand. Its clear from the start that they did not want to win the game. Loosing possesion when the ball being kicked to them, waiting for Samoa to come to them, no pressure applied like in the second half. Penality at the dying mins of the game, man they shud have done some moves. too late, we need more games to loose in order to win. All the best for the rest of the series!

Coach Savou should taken a leaf out of Tietjens book and atleast taken Vunibaka to give their team more experience.Their lack of vision and composure on field is due to lack of game experience. Once again Savou will have to rue at the end of the tournament about another missed silverwear.Vunibaka would have given the boys that extra confidence they needed.......

let's learn from the movie,Facing the giants.win or loss, continue to glorify God.What matters how the players put their trust in God and people in fiji believing the same course.Let's just prepare for the rain anyway.....

probably not, nz ,samoa & rsa is the team to watch out for, may be they can try again next year.

They did well considering the number of new players in the team. Lets' not be too harsh on them and quick to judge. I strongly believe that once they settle down and get into the rythm of the game with their combinations and kick-off woes, they will give NZ a very good run for their money. They are well conditioned and can beat any team in the competition. Go Fiji!

    See you at the final!

I thought Fiji played well, not that well but well enough to qualify. I saw some inconsistancies which were goal kicking and kick-off which would have to be rectified before the knockout starts as we know how unpredictable Samoa is. Overall goo performance but much improvement is needed.

    All the best.
