Halves carry Nadi's hopes
Fiji Times - Friday, September 21, 2007 8:21 AM
NADI will be banking on the combination of halfback Aporosa Vata and flyhalf Jo Tora to guide the side to its first provincial victory for the new millennium.
The Jetsetters have reached the final on four occasions only to lose out.
During the then Telecom-sponsored event, Nadi lost 11-17 to Naitasiri,
The two teams played again in the final in 2002 with Naitasiri winning 15-6 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.
In 2005 the side lost to Nadroga in the Fiji Cup final 24-17. The Stallions defeated Nadi 27-17 in last year's Sanyo Cup final.
Coach Iliesa Tanivula said his game plan would centre around the Vata-Tora combination in the final against Naitasiri at Prince Charles Park on Saturday.
"They're the senior players and have been the backbone of the team throughout the season," Tanivula said.
"They really have a lot to offer the team."
The two players have played together for the Crusaders and have formed a formidable combination to help Nadi remain unbeaten in the competition this season.
They were also trial lists in the Flying Fijians for the Rugby World Cup but were unlucky to miss out on a spot.
Tora, who is a utility player, is an experienced pivot having six Test caps under his belt.
Aporosa Vata rose to stature in 2004 and become the number one halfback. He is known for his snipping runs and big tackles.
Tanivula said while their approach to the match remained the same, preparations during training had intensified.
"Our training has been good and it's a step up for the final. We know Naitasiri with physical approach but we will be ready for them," Tanivula said.
"We really haven't worried about Naitasiri's preparations but rather on how we will need to approach the game."
Nadi comfortably beat Suva 45-15 last week to march into the final. Tanivula said Suva exposed some weaknesses in the side which needed to be rectified before the final.
The former Highlanders Super 12 player attributed strong defence as their main weapon throughout the season.
Former Fiji national lock Apisai Naevo is expected to come off the bench in the match.
Former Cardiff Blues player Mosese Luveitasau will play in the final against Nadi.
The speedster injured his cheek bone against Navosa and was ruled out of last week's semi-final in Nadroga.
"He played for the Rosi club at the Vanuakula sevens and he looks fit. So he should be back this Saturday," Naitasiri rugby secretary Viliame Kanatabua said.
Kanatabua added that they have done their preparations and were ready to take on Nadi.
"Players are all focused and preparations have been done. We will now leave it to the Lord to decide who wins," Kanatabua said.
"We know that we will have to lift our preparations against a team that has remained unbeaten this season."
