EXPERIENCE BEST MASTER: SEAHAWKS used their experience to beat rivals QVS I 19-12 in the final of the Nesian Free Spirit women’s sevens tournament at Suva Grammar grounds yesterday.
The win saw the Seahawks return home $1000 richer, with QVS settling for $500 in the country’s biggest tournament for our women rugby players.
Fiji Women’s Rugby secretary Mareta Vusonitokalau said the tournament not only provided the biggest prize money ever for women’s rugby but had the largest number of teams taking part.
“We had teams from the Suva area, Serua and one that represented Labasa,” Vusonitokalau said.
“The teams not only came well prepared but they were versed with the rules of the game.”
She said this was the last sevens tournament for women before the start of the fifteens season.
“The level of competition seen in this one-day tournament augers well for women’s rugby in the country and we hope we can keep on improving our game as we head into the fifteens season,” she said.
“The final between QVS and Seahawks was a very tightly contested match and the inclusion of some Fijiana player’s in the two sides really lifted the tempo of the game.”
Seahawks had the services of Fijiana captain Salote Tikoisuva who was ably supported by Mereoni Uluiviti, Luisa Uluilakeba, Elina Taoba and Rusila Nagasau, while QVS I had Iva Nancy, Laisani, Tavaita and Talica Vodo. The best player of the tournament was Mereoni Uluiviti who walked away with $100.
In the semi-finals, QVS I defeated Labasa while Seahawks beat Cruizers.
